Minnesota Public Radio began broadcasting January 22, 1967 from the third floor of Wimmer Hall on the campus of Saint John’s University. The first words uttered by engineer Dan Rieder were, “Heed my words Earth People. You have 10 minutes to live.”  I joined the team as a Development Officer on November 1, 1999.   I work from  the very same offices overlooking Saint Francis House.

My job is to assist folks in the process of “reaching our unique audience with their unique message”.  To that end,  we offer a fifteen second “underwriting announcement” on air and a 300 x 250 web ad on our website, www.mpr.org. We even offer a short audio message in front our podcasts and live streaming.  Underwriting is a way of supporting MPR and introducing your business to our listeners.  More than just a commerical announcement, underwriting makes it clear that programming would not exist without the sponsor’s support, something the audience notices and appreciates.  Underwriting messages have to  maintain a “non-commercial” feel and may include the business name, a brief description of the business or service plus location and contact information.
